Amazon.com Product Description
The Clearblue Easy Fertility Monitor helps reduce the time it takes to conceive your baby. Trying to get pregnant should be an exciting time for you and your partner. The Clearblue Easy Fertility Monitor provides an advanced monitoring method to maximize your chances of getting pregnant.

The Clearblue Easy Fertility Monitor is simple to use, and helps reduce the time it takes to conceive your baby. Detailed view.

Test stick monitors hormones in your urine.

The screen displays three levels of fertility -- low, high, and peak (shown).

Use the "M" button to tell the monitor your monthly cycle has begun.
This Clearblue monitor is very simple to use. The unit is equipped with a test stick that is used to monitor hormone levels present in your urine. Briefly, a test is completed by wetting a stick for three seconds, placing it in the test stick slot, and waiting for results. The monitor can be programmed to follow the days of your monthly cycle to help maximize your chances of getting pregnant. In addition, each test displays a fertility status reading on the screen. Based on the results of your test, your chances for conception are displayed on-screen using three bars that correspond to the three different levels of fertility -- low, high, and peak.

The monitor also comes equipped with a handy "M Button." When you press the M Button you tell the monitor that your period has started and a new monthly cycle has begun. When you press the button you also establish the six hours each day during which you can do a test. This is called the "testing window." The testing window should be set so that it is convenient for you to test the first urine of the day both on weekdays and the weekend. At the start of each new cycle you can either press your M Button at the same time as you did on your previous cycle, or if you wish, you can change your testing window by setting the M Button at a different time. Remember, your testing window must be convenient for you to test the first urine of each day.

Your Changing Fertility
This device more accurately identifies a greater number of fertile days than any other method. During the early days of your menstrual cycle, you have a low hormone concentration, i.e. low fertility. It is during these days that your chances of getting pregnant are significantly lower. At 10-12 days into your cycle, you experience a rise in Estrogen (E3G) that signals high fertility. Your chances of conceiving are increased during these days before ovulation because sperm can survive for up to five days.

During this stage -- the Follicular Phase -- a follicle containing an egg develops in the ovary. A surge of Luteinizing hormone signals peak fertility, and it is here that your chances of conceiving are at their highest. This peak moment of fertility only last a couple days, but the Clearblue helps you pinpoint this optimal moment for conception. It is at this moment that ovulation occurs, and the follicle containing the egg bursts releasing the ovum. Of course, the egg can be fertilized for up to 24 hours, therefore you have a short duration of time within which you can optimize your chances for conception. The fourteen days after ovulation is called the Luteal Phase. During this time, the remains of the follicle forms the "corpus luteum," and, again, your chances of getting pregnant are significantly lower. All of these phases can be monitor with the help of the Clearblue Easy Fertility Monitor.

Performing a Test
The Clearblue monitor is easy to use. To perform a test simply switch on the monitor every morning within your testing window and before you go to the bathroom. On the mornings when the monitor requires further information about your hormone levels, a test will be required. Tests must be performed with the first urine of the day. First remove the test stick from its protective foil wrapper and use immediately. Hold the test stick pointing downwards in your urine stream for only three seconds. This is long enough to ensure the sampling end is sufficiently wet. Keep the test stick pointing downwards, take the cap off the handle, and place it over the wet end of the test stick.

You will see a red light flashing in the test stick slot. This is the monitor checking to see if the slot is ready to receive the test stick. You should not place the test stick into the slot until the red light has gone out. Holding the test stick by the cap with cut corner pointing downwards, insert it into the slot. Push the test stick down until it lies flat and clicks in place. Once you've correctly inserted the test stick, the display will flash the test stick symbol for about five minutes while the monitor reads and interprets the information in your urine. At the end of five minutes the monitor will ask you to remove the test stick which should be thrown away. Your fertility status will then be displayed. It's that easy.

5 out of 5 stars So fun to use!   July 23, 2010

This mini-computer is well worth the money. You can start keeping track Days 1-5 of your period. Any later than that and you have to wait til your next cycle. Be sure to buy the test sticks. The computer prompts you when you need to use them. I went through 21 sticks the first month! Some have said the directions are confusing. If you read all the instructions from beginning to end, it makes sense. It would only be complicated if you travel a lot and change time zones often.

5 out of 5 stars Works very well   July 23, 2010

My wife and I purchased this monitor due to her irregular periods. Her menstrual cycle would occur approximately every 3 months or so, which made it very difficult to know when she was ovulating. We had been trying to conceive for a year and were planning on scheduling a fertility appointment until we had decided to give the monitor a try. We figured the monitor would be less than a fertility workup and we could use it on future planned pregnancies as well.

Long story short, this monitor never showed an ovulation cycle, which is what we were scared of. My wife basically was not ovulating, and this was confirmed by our family doctor. Our doctor was thankfully familiar with prescribing Clomid, which is now generic and less than $10 a prescription. Clomid works by blocking the estrogen negative feedback loop to the pituitary gland, causing increased FSH and LH hormone secretion, leading to more ovarian follicles and their rupture, which equals ovulation! While taking Clomid the monitor accurately showed increases in hormone levels up to the point of showing us when she was ovulating. Within 2 months of regular ovulation cycles, and the monitor tracking and confirming them perfectly, we conceived. My wife is currently 19 weeks pregnant and due in December.

This monitor was very helpful in us figuring out why we weren't getting pregnant and even more helpful in tracking whether or not Clomid was doing its job. Though it is a little pricey, as well as the replacement sticks, I believe that the purchase is well worth it. Especially if you have irregular menstrual cycles and would like to confirm whether you are ovulating or not.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the money, only product that does what it does...   July 20, 2010
C-Reader (North NJ, United States)
Count me among the moms-to-be who said she'd write a review of this product if it worked. I'm an older mom, and last year I had a miscarriage at 9 weeks and wanted to feel like I had some control over being able to get pregnant again. I am approaching 40 so the possibility of not being able to conceive again was scary, and there is so much of it that's out of your control. You really can't know what is helping or not helping when trying to conceive, BUT there are a few things you can do to actually increase your odds. The most important one of all is timing. If your monthly egg can only be fertilized for 12-24 hours, you don't want to miss that window....

So I bought the monitor. Sure, it seems a little pricey, but compared to having to possibly spend thousands on infertility treatments later, it is a STEAL. Each month of trying really matters a lot, especially when you're getting older. I didn't want to waste any time.

Unlike the ovulation sticks you can buy from other companies, this monitor gives you more days of heads-up when your fertile days are approaching. It doesn't just tell you the day or two when your LH is rising, but also several days before when your estrogen is increasing. No other system does this.

As I recovered from the miscarriage and was closer to being able to start trying again, I started using the monitor to see when my cycles were going to come back to normal. It felt good getting so much information about what was going on with my body.

For the first two months I used the monitor, I saw my cycles steadily returning to what they had been before the pregnancy -- which was a great relief. Each month I got a little closer. It was a GREAT feeling to know my body was getting back to normal.

The third month I was using it, my cycle was back to normal -- and that's when I got pregnant again. Now I'm 31 weeks and so far all is well!!

There are some drawbacks: 1) For people with irregular or unusually long or short cycles, I've heard the monitor can be more confusing to use, but I don't know that first-hand so I couldn't tell you all the details. However, most people I've read about seem to have some luck with it even if they are having irregular cycles. Those taking Clomid and that stuff can also use this product. 2) I had trouble figuring out how to insert the sticks at first, and I wasted some. Luckily I was doing a practice month before I was ready to start trying again, so I got the hang of it. I still had to wake up every morning and use my first morning urine, which isn't always easy, but it was definitely a small price to pay for being able to get pregnant naturally rather than having to go through the utter sloughs of despair some people go through.

If you get this project, you should go to BabyCenter or a website like that and get into a Clearblue Easy Fertility Monitor Users discussion group - there is at least one of them on there, and all the women will answer your questions and put your mind at ease, as well as trade nitty-gritty details about where they are in their cycles and how the monitor worked for them and what they did and didn't do. It's yet another thing that makes you feel more in control of your fertility, and will help you with all those freak outs over things like 'Why is the monitor showing me this' or 'Is it normal for it to be flashing for two days' or whatever. It keeps you calm during what for some people can be a long (but successful in the end!) wait. And it makes you feel as if other people are pulling for you, since your daily readings are not something you're going to share with your pals all day.

Thank God this company figured out what they were doing and created this device. It's SO useful and I think more companies should find ways to make fertility easier like ClearBlue did. Miscarriages and trying to conceive are so heartbreaking for so many people; this puts you back in the driver's seat.

5 out of 5 stars BFP after 2 months!!!!!   July 20, 2010

I bought this after 6 months of ttc with no luck I decided it was time to take the plunge and I wish I had bought it sooner. My first cycle using this monitor I had a very long cycle(not unusually for me) so as upset I was I had hoped it learned my horomones and hoped I would get a peak day next month. Well on CD15 I got my first peak day!!! We ha been bd every other day on high and then bd on both peak days and here I am 11dpo with my first ever BFP!!! Totally worth the money and in the long run its not that expensive :) Just buy it and save yourself the time!!

4 out of 5 stars This does work but be patient   July 14, 2010

This really is a great product but you have to be patient. I have a 1 and 1/2 year old and had a miscarriage in january. I was eager to start trying right away so I bought the monitor after reading all of the reviews and thought "YES! Im going to be one of those people that gets pregnant the first month" I wasnt and was extremely disappointed but I kept using the monitor because it really does what it is suppose to and also takes all the guessing out of the game for you, which is a huge relief, because trying to have a baby is stressful enough.I used the monitor 2 more times and on my third cycle got pregnant!Im hoping this one sticks and I will definetly be using this again. So for anyone that wants to relieve some stress and know they are doing all they can purchase this product but be patient!!
